Although leadership theories and concepts have long been studied and recognized as important practices in other disciplines, they have rarely been studied in the field of sport coaching, particularly among coaches in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Understanding the application of leadership theories and concepts to sport coaching, what theories and concepts are most preferred by NAIA coaches, while comparing sociological perspectives for significance, may better help to determine which leadership styles are most preferred and most successful in a NAIA coaching atmosphere. This presentation reviews a study conducted to determine these preferred leadership styles and the findings comparing the preferred leadership styles to sociological perspectives. Coaching efficacy, and coaches as leaders and teachers of athletes will also be discussed. This information may be helpful for future coaches or athletic directors that aim to develop successful athletic programs.
